Subject: Hello!
Ok, I just processed about 30 "subscribe me" requests, so I want to send a
test message to make sure everything is working.
Please note that messages sent to the list have the SENDER as the return
address, not the list, so if you want your reply to be seen by everyone,
make sure you address the mail to parnet-list@ben.com.
To stay on topic, I'll also ask the first questions:
Where is the latest version of the ParNET software?
Is source available?

I sent e-mail to Doug Walker a couple days ago about the problem I have been
having with ParNET. He didn't say anything to me about getting the "newer"
version, etc. I believe it still calls itself verstion 1.0. There are archive
files out there that call themself v2.4 but as far as I can see, it is
identical to the ones in v1.0 except for updating the phone number in the
header for the BBS (which is still wrong!).
Has anyone else ever noted that the number of bytes in the netstat program is
different (in all copies I have found) than what is reported in the parnet.doc
file? Is this a problem I should be worried about?

No matter what I do, my copy of netstat never does a thing. It runs
whether the net is up or not, but never registers any transfers. I never
thought to compare the actual length to the doc length.

Ben asked for a list of FTP sites. I just got this from Archie. There is also
a BBS (in Cary, NC) pointed to by the phone number in the ParNET docs which
is out of date, but the phone-computer will give the new number. I can get
it from home tonight if it is needed. Don't have it here at work. There is
also an archive that claims to include the ParNET source for all you hackers :)

>
> Is source available?
Parnet hasn't been updated in several years; the latest
version is on Fish Disk 400.
Source is not available.
Unfortunately, updates are out of the question for now.
John Toebes and I did a major rewrite of parnet to turn
it into something that could handle multiple communications
protocols, was completely asynchronous, handled multiple
network nodes, etc. We got it pretty close to being a
commercially salable product, but since we both worked for
SAS Institute at the time, our employment agreements bound
us not to sell it.
Since it was becoming more than we wanted to deal with in
our spare time, we wanted someone else to take over the
polish of it and do support. We also wanted it to be
available on as many machines as possible. Our solution
was to license it to Commodore, for inclusion on a future
version of Workbench.
So in January 1991, we did so. In order to do this and not
run afoul of SAS's restrictions, we first signed over all
source rights to SAS Institute. SAS then signed an agreement
with Commodore that gave Commodore full source rights in exchange
for some hardware that SAS used, and is still using, to develop
the Amiga C product.
Commodore has had it for over two years, and hasn't done anything
with it. I don't think they will. I'm not allowed to. SAS was
never interested in it as a commercial product, but only
participated as a favor to John and myself (and because they
got some hardware from the deal).
The only possibility here is that John does actually have a special
source license for NET: from SAS, so he could do something with it.
Last I heard he had plans for a commercial product.

No, netstat was screwed up in that distribution and never really worked
anyway. I don't know, maybe the wrong version got put in there,
which would explain why it never worked.

I believe there is only one version of the ParNET handler software and I
have never seen the sources of that one. (written by software distillery)
But the latest version I have of parnet.device is I believe 1.1 and I have
got that one with sources.

Subject: SUMMARY: ParNET problems solved
Fellow ParNETers!!
I believe I may have been the "final straw" for Ben Jackson's
creation of this list, so I thought I should pass along a report of my
"problem solved". I want to extend my thanks to all that helped me
track this down! Thanks also go to Doug Walker, John Toebes and Matt
Dillon for providing ParNET in the first place!!
I had been having an odd 1-sided problem between my A500 w/
AdSpeed and my A2000. Both are running AmigaDOS/WorkBench 2.05 with
CrossDOS v5.04+. I had used the ParBENCH package of Vernon Graner (CBM)
to get my ParNET setup and going. Along the way I had used several
different copies of ParNET in case I had a "rotten" one, all with the
same results. Whenever I started it on the A500 I just got "out of
memory" errors. However, it started fine and worked beautifully on the
A2000 side (accessing the devices on the A500). But, the reason I
wanted to install it was so the A500 could access some of the devices on
the A2000, not the other way around !
Using various suggestions and advice from USENET and this list,
I tested it from scratch with a minimal cable configuration. I used an
old A2000 w/ WB1.3 and booted from the ParBENCH disk and my original A2000.
All worked perfectly! I slowly started inserting my desired extension
cables and switch boxes until I ended up with two short (3-6') cables to
each of 2 A-B switch boxes and the 25' ParNET cable between the switch
boxes. All worked fine. I then did the same with the A500 and original
A2000. This time booting from the ParBENCH floppy. This worked fine
also.

To make this long story a little shorter :) I tracked the
problem down to the MOUNT command that CrossDOS v5.04+ provide. In the
installation of this package you can choose to replace the Commodore
MOUNT command with their version. According to them, you would want to
do this because their version provides all the functionality of the
original PLUS a couple enhancements by them. Needless to say, I have
stumbled onto some "special feature" :) I should point out that I am
STILL using the CrossDOS MOUNT on the A2000 with no problem. It is just
the A500 w/ AdSpeed that I had to switch back to the AmigaDOS MOUNT.
Does anyone think it is an adverse interaction with the AdSpeed? We
have had the AdSpeed for a couple months now and it has worked well for
us. The only problem is that it can't boot at 14 MHz, but can be
software switched in the User-StartUp file.
I thought I had read that WB 2.1 was going to use the CrossDOS
v5.0. I wonder if this means their MOUNT command is now the AmigaDOS
standard?
As for ParBENCH, I think it is a very nice package. I was asked
by some to make it available to an FTP site. I started to upload it to
amiga.physik.unizh.ch, but they specifically say NOT to upload DMS
files. I have repackaged it into just the bare essentials and put it
into an LHA archive, but I am concerned that doing so might make Mr.
Graner angry. (I don't have an e-mail address for him at present, I may
actually break down and use the old voice thing and call him :))
Instead, I have uploaded the DMS file (complete with a couple tiny
typos) to
wuarchive.wustl.edu:/systems/amiga/incoming/comm/ParBENCH31.DMS
Since I assume you all already have ParNET, you don't really need
ParBENCH. It does make it very easy to install though. I am a
"software collector", so I grabbed it and liked it and would like to
make it more readily available to others. :)
If you are still reading, I want to thank you all for your help
and suggestions!!! Please send me e-mail if I can be of any help to
anyone else. It's now time to have fun and PLAY with this thing! If
only that CD-ROM FileSystem I ordered would get here before the weekend
so I can actually use the CD!!! :)

This is very interesting. I just had a similar set of difficulties
installing ParNet, using the WB2.1 Mount command! It turns out that I
solved them by reverting to the "old" 2.04 mount.
Detailed description: Using an Amiga 3000 with GVP 040, and an old
Amiga 1000 with Phoenix board and Derringer 030. I have previously
installed Parnet many times on many different configurations, and consider
myself quite good at it. So I was surprised when Parnet crashed the
1000. (Ran fine on the 3000 end.) Both machines were running 2.1,
the Parnet code was loaded onto each from the same floppy so was identical
(except of course for unit number changes, which I edited on the 1000).
Once I determined it was a problem with 2.1 Mount, I dug up a 2.04
version and everything now runs fine.
Sounds like there is a problem with 2.1 mount that only manifests
itself on 1000s and 500s?

Hi,
I'd like to know if anyone has used parnet from 1200 <> 2000. I
installed it on both machines the other day , and can't get it to work
correctly.
I can grab files from the 2000 with the 1200, but as soon as I try get
files from the 1200 with the 2000. The system dies (hangs).
It seems to be netpnet-server on the 1200 side that is dieing.
Can anyone help?

Hi all. I'm looking into setting up a parnet within my apartment here, but
had just a few questions:
What is the maximum cable length? I may need to squeeze 30-35 feet out of it.
is this out of the question? If so, why? Too much resistance, or too much
propagation delay? (If it's resistance, I think I have a hack for that) :-)
Secondly, with parnet, what resources are available to the remote system?
dh0,dh1,...,df0,df1,... What about ser: and par:? The reason I ask is because
there could be some definate possibility if shared serial ports could be
implemented. My roommate and I had an old HP LaserJet I (original boat-anchor!)
dropped on us, & it could be useful to have it as a shared resource on
both systems. Ex: net:ser could be the remote's access to the printer...
Has anyone done this?
thanks for any help,

I had reported earlier that I uploaded the ParBENCH DMS file to wuarchive's
amiga/incoming/comm directory and several of you apparently tried to use it with
no success. I'm sorry for any problems. I can't figure out what went wrong.
I have now uploaded an LHA version of the necessary files to the same directory.
Please check this out and let me know if this was successful or not. It checks
out ok when I download it to my SPARCstation and use the Unix version of LHA
to test it :)
Sorry again for the problems. I have never had perfect luck with a DMS file.

As far as I know parnet.device v2.0 is the same as v1.0, only it has
got rid of some enforcer hits. So there is *NO* need to have a 2.0x
kickstart amiga.

That is curious. Because as far as I know Parnet can't run without dillon's
parnet.device.

I wonder if anyone ever tried to install some buffer in the ParNet
lines to protect the CIAs. I've used ParNet for a couple of weeks
but got fed up with it because you had to be really careful with
switching on the seperate machines or the CIAs might blow.
I subscribed to this list because I liked ParNet a lot (particularly
its speed and ease of two-way data handling) and hope someone found
a solution to this continuous destruction of CIAs

Hmmm, it is possible to make a little hardware trick which switches the
buffering IC depending on send/receive. But I don't know if you'd blow
those chips instead. (well they are cheaper :) And especially if it's
quick enough.
I'll look in to it tonight and mayby I can conceive something that should
do the job. (and boost up transmission quality on longer lines)

Subject: Parnet, bbs's, and a printer
Hi there! I have two questions about parnet that I am hoping you guys might
be able to ask.
1) I have two machines, a 3000 and a accelerated 500 (a ec030). I have a
gvp drive hanging off the side of my 500 also. I would really like
to turn the 500 into a multiline BBS..... meaning that I need more
serial ports. I'm not talented enough to build the PD serial expander
that is kicking around, so here is what I propose.... I could take the
gvp off, add a 'slingshot' expander that enables me to add 1 zorroII
slot on the 500.... then I could plug in the C= or GVP (?) serial
expanders around, and i will have solved some of my problems.... but
then of course I have no harddrive.... not to be discouraged, what I
thought I might be able to do is mount the 105 meg drive from the
GVP thing for the 500 inside the 3000, so that I have 2 drives in the
3000 now, then run a parnet link between the two computers, and let
the BBS run over the link.... people phone the 500, but all programs.
and messages are stored on the 3000. Is the parnet link fast enough
for this? Is this even feasible? I don't really want to buy a 2000
just to run a multi line bbs, and besides, my poor 500 is getting
lonely just sitting around!
2) Is it possible to have a printer hooked up to the 3000 once I have a
parnet link hooked up? A parallel port switcher surely doesn't work
does it? Is there anyway around this?
Thanks alot.

Hi Parnetters,
As my News articles about the ParNET list have propogated outward, I have
been receiving a steady stream of requests. Since there have been many
useful bits of information posted already, I wanted to make the old posts
available to new members of the list.
Every piece of mail received so far has been saved (in mailbox format)
in a file on the host which services mail for ben.com, cave.tcp.com.
Cave does not have the resources to be a public FTP site, so I'm looking
for a place where I can keep the archives of the list availabe to those
interested in getting "back issues." If you have a site suggestion, or
administrate a site that would be willing to make this archive available,
please contact me (not the list).
To give this message more direct ParNET relevance, here are the results
of a quick "benchmark" I did today:
740000 bytes from A500/14Mhz to an A3000: 23.70s
740000 bytes from A3000/25 to A500: 21.86s
I attribute the difference to the A3000's faster HD.
740000 bytes simultaneously between A500 and A3000: 41.70s
The tests were done using copy net:path/<that 740000 file> nil: on
both machines, timing done by csh's built in prompt sub %e.
This works out to about 34k/sec, which is not as fast as I had expected.
Originally I intendted to test raw net speed (as opposed to the NET:
device) using the source examples from the parnetdev.lha that someone
posted to the list the other day. Unfortunately, if I compile and
execute the 'receive' program on the A500, the A3000 resets immediately.
Has anyone had any luck with that source? What I hope to do eventually
is create a dnet.lib that connects to a running dnet client over the
parnet. (Not to link the Amigas, but so that I can have dnet clients
on the A500 through the modem connection on my A3000)

Subject: Dnet over parnet
I've also been thinking about running dnet over parnet and came to a couple
of conclusions...
The reason that it doesn't work is simple, the dnet.device is busy and would
be run on the wrong machine.
I think that I've come up with a way to get it to work but I'm not an
experienced enough Amiga coder to try it (nor do I currently have the time
to learn quickly...) What I think would work would be to have a process on
the machine running dnet (server) that would monitor a certain area (say T:)
looking for a certain file (to_unix) ad would take that file and send it as
straight text through dnet to the unix machine passing through all control
codes so that vt100 (or whatever can be maintained...). It would also
look for a file (from_unix) and would pass that through to the remote
machine.
It kinda is a packet method but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
Any other suggestions, ideas, people who could quickly test this out???
Thanks,
Josh

Well, my plan wasn't to make use of dnet.device. Dnet isn't implemented
like Parnet, it's a link-time library which communicates with a server
through a messageport. My idea was to take this link library, and modify
it to make read/write requests over the net to a server on the machine
with Dnet running. This server would receive the parnet request, and
act like a regular dnet client (very easy). So to run Dnet clients on
a machine connected by parnet, you simply relink with my replacement
dnet.lib, and it looks over the net for the dnet server.
BTW, under this implementation I'm not terribly concerned that I still
have NET: around... If all I can do is have dnet on two machines, I'll
be thrilled. :)

Under 2.0 this should be trivial. Create a directory (doesn't matter
where it is) and make an assignment to it, say NETDNET:. There is a call
in 2.0 to be notified when a directory changes, so you can just Wait()
until this directory changes. For a 1.3 compatible solution, you could
simply poll the directory for new files every 30s or something. Then
determine where it's going, based on a filename, header, whatever, and
either use put/getfiles on it or copy it to NET:.
Once again, I'd like to ask people to report their experiences with the
sources in the parnet.device source that was posted to this list. Each
time I tried them, one or both machines would crash. It appeared that
parnet.device supports multiple independant channels, so I was running
this with NET: active. Should I try running them without NET:?

Subject: what's new
I have a very old version of ParNET (maybe 1.0 or 1.1) which doesn't
work very well.
I have an A3000 and an A1000. I tried to connect them, both running
under KS V37.175, and I get
Task NET: failed... requester
after a few minutes of use.
ParNET also seems not to handle AmigaDOS Locks correctly.
arp.library/CompareLock() or dos.library/SameLock() called with
two Locks on Network: say that they are different.
So I want to know if there is a recent version of ParNET.
Is the preceding bug fixed ?
Won't it be obsolete with Workbench 3.1 comming... ?

Having constructed the required cable for parnet, and installing the

this an inherent bug of parnet.device [not liking accelarators] or are we
just being stupid 8-) . Do we need to get hold of a 68020 compiled version

Parnet hangs on large files. Help!
My setup is A4000 with 14meg ram & 2 external 880k floppies
A500 with AdSpeed and GVP Series I HD controller w 4meg; 1meg chip hack
- 80 meg quantum SCSI one external 880k flop
I can copy small files all day but large ones hang the host where I am
working from to copy files from the A500 to my A4000. The host is the
A4000. It hangs when I copy large files. Could it be a small stack
size problem? That is my best guess. But I'm not sure how to up it.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Hello parnet-list readers,
Just a note to let you know that ben.com and therefore the parnet-list
are back up. Hopefully my mail server's disk won't have any more
problems. :-)
On to a list related topic:
I'm thinking about collecting a FAQ for the list that I could mail to
new subscribers. The question I see most often is "How far can I get
parnet to go?" which comes up on comp.sys.amiga.hardware about once a
week. I have a 8' cable which works fine, but some people are
interested in driving a cable 50m or more, and I really don't know
how feasable that is. So lets hear it for maximum length and how
you managed it. If you feel particularly qualified, write up a few
paragraphs on "long distance parnet" and I'll get a faq going.

there would be any way to use parnet to be able to use a 2nd modem for a

I have my CDTV in one room connected to my Amiga 2000 in another
with 3 parallel cables plugged together- 25' + 10'(parnet wired) + 10'
for a total length of about 45 feet. I don't use it heavily, but as far
as I know I haven't had any errors.

Running netpnet-server unix X sets the unit of a machine. You can then
mount that machine by having a NET: like entry with Unit: X.
So I think what you want to do is:
type `netpnet-server unit 0' on the 3000. On the other two machines, have
entries in your mounlist like:
3000:
...
Unit: 0
...
#
But that's just a guess from the source. :-)

I do not believe that it is possible to use parnet with more than
two machines. Matt said that it was THEORETICALLY possible, but
never wrote parnet.device to handle it; NET: certainly doesn't
handle anything but parnet unit 0 and unit 1, so it could never
connect to more than one machine at a time.

Something to do with mounting units 0, 1 and 2. My guess is, create a unit
2 mountlist on the third machine and run another server on each machine and
hope they don't conflict. Let's call the machines pu0 pu1 pu2 (parnet unit#).
on pu0, run NETPNET-SERVER UNIT 1
NETPNET-SERVER UNIT 2
on pu1, run NETPNET-SERVER UNIT 0
NETPNET-SERVER UNIT 2
on pu2, run NETPNET-SERVER UNIT 0
NETPNET-SERVER UNIT 1
then mount net: on all machines.
If this vaguely works then one definate prob is how to specify the same
named device on each of the three machines, ie; net:ram :-/

Hmmm .. I wonder.

no switch boxes yet :-), i figured one small step at a time.
re: the problem. the two acknowledge each other in all combinations of the

no joy. with the patch installed they still behave the same way. i
screwed around with globvec values & priority settings, but nothing
has worked yet. i have concentrated on the 3000/2500 connection because i
feared the different OS's might not tolerate each other well.

successfully connected my A500 and A3000 with no special effort.

You might get a cheap continuity tester and verify the cables yourself.

Subject: bug? Help!!!
My A4000 is setup as a UUCP site to the outside world, and a parnet server to
another A2000. This weekend, the client machine tried for the first time to
post a news article (mail works just fine).
Once written out of the editor, and uux has been executed, uux says:
Could not find TMP<spooge>.news-work
TMP<spooge>.news-work: (6)File not found.
Now, I did some investigation with snoopdos, to track down the offending
open.... I tracked it to its lair, but my finding seem impossible. Here is
some uux.c code:
--- Save current dir.
- CD to uuspool: (SNOOPDOS sees this)
getcwd(path,128);
chdir(GetConfigDir(UUSPOOL));
< Spooge deleted that does lotsa stuff. Tracked fine with SNOOPDOS >
error = Queue();
---- In Queue three lockfiles are created < SNOOPDOS verified >
The C. and D. files are opened. < SNOOPDOS verified >
Then:
chdir(path); /* THIS DOES NOT SHOW UP IN SNOOPDOS and does not
OCCUR, causing the error */
Then:
error = Copy(file_name, DataFile);
First line of Copy -> fd = fopen(from, "r"); FAILS!
- All these unlocks show up
UnLockFile(ExecFile);
UnLockFile(CommandFile);
UnLockFile(DataFile);
- This cd to the same locale occurs.
chdir(path);
Why would that intermediate chdir in Queue() never show up in snoopdos? This
copy of uux works just fine for me on my main machine, so I would suspect
parnet. Anyone seen such a problem? I really have no work around, as uux is
cd'ing all around.

My parnetted client was trying to post new using Dillon's uucp package and
was failing. As it turns out, a temporary file was placed in the current
directory (a netmounted area), a getcwd was done to save the spot, and then
the program cd'd away from that area.
Well, the getcwd returned something like:
NETWORK:work/uucp/news
This is not a working pathname in parnet. To get there, one must use:
net:work/uucp/news
So, when uux tried to cd there, a File Not Found error occured, and thus the
post failed.
Sksh exibits similar results when trying to prefix cwd on commands for
execution.
Question!! How to get around this?
1) parnet should not return unusable paths from getcwd. Anyone have the
source or are the author's willing to take a peek?
2) I tried relabling network to net, but I'm sure there is a good reason why
they are different. I'm no amiga programmer. Unix, yeah, AmigaDOS/Intuition
NOT! Anyhow, it failed miserably.

Looks like the "name" (label) of the net: device is "NETWORK".

Hm, why can't you get there using the name instead of the device id?

I'd try Relabel drive net: name net (I haven't used c:relabel in a while,
forgive syntax errors please).

I'm not sure that is "unusable," but I'd need more information.

I doubt there is a good reason, it was probably just asthetic. Same reason
you refer to your system disk as SYS: (brevity) instead of System_2.0:
(descriptive). How exactly did it "fail miserably"?

From what I have seen, network: follows the mount around on the remote system.
For example, when I cd network: from a shell it takes me to wherever the
last thing I did on that remote filesystem was, not its root. Thus:
network:work/uucp/news is only valid if I haven't visited the drive yet. Other-
wise it looks for work/uucp/news in the current mounted location (like MOOSE-
DOS and a device)
> I'd try Relabel drive net: name net (I haven't used c:relabel in a while,

I tried this, but it makes net: behave like network: (the retension of current
location thing, and breaks lotsa stuff).
Any other ideas (pretty please!)....

Subject: "new improved" parnet.device
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1993 13:57:05 -0500
From: bj@cs.purdue.edu (Ben Jackson)
Hi all,
I found this on Aminet the other day, had to wait until I got home to see
if it was any good (docs are powerpacked). Looks like a slick
parnet.device replacement, so-called version 2.1. It's 2.0+ only,
but it's compatible with the older version (so you can run that on your
1.3 systems). The author claims a 25% improvement (39k/s to 50k/s),
but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.
Here it is, for your enjoyment. Let me know if you have any luck with
it.

Subject: Help parnetting more than two Amigas
To: parnet-list@ben.com
We are trying to connect more than two Amigas via the ParNET software/hardware.
We have constructed a cable which will connect three machines together (with the
approprate lines tied together). Each machine has a mountlist with an unique
unit number and a unique device name. We also are using the parnet.device that
can be found in an archive "parnet2.lha". This is supposed to allow multiple
address on the network. Getting two machines to talk to one another works, but
as soon as the third machine wants to use the network, the whole thing freezes up.
My question: Has anybody successfully gotten more than two Amigas parnetted
together? If so how?
Any comments, suggestions, answers would be appreicated.
Thanks...

NET: does not support more than two Amigas connected together.
It doesn't matter how many your parnet supports.

As i remeber correctly, you CAN'T connect more then 2 Amiga's together
without additional hardware...
The only way I know to connect more Amiga's is by using de MultiFaceCard 2
from BSC , its a multiserial card, but also has a parallel port, and also a
special device called pit (or something like that), and its a sort of a
parnet.device clone, so it will allow complete 'networking' by using your
standard par. port and the MFC port, and connect them to other par. ports,
or even other MFC's ! And when you connect 2 of those card's together you
will get a speed of 100KB/sec !!!
I am not an owner of such a card, so it may not be totaly correct, but this
i what i have read (and remembered) ...

I guess you mean when source and destination machines use the same card, not
2 cards in the same machine ?

Anyone out there got one and can fill in some details ? Sounds interesting.
If the parallel hardware connection between, say, 3 machines is
established and allows all parallel port pins concerned to read signals
succesfully then surely it's only the software that is stopping Parnet
from talking to a third or more agent.
Can anyone into hardware comment on the validity of the hardwired
multi-connection options of the C= parallel port ?
Has anyone got a SAS compilable version of Parnet working ?
BTW Would a 'Reply-To: parnet-list@ben.com' in the headers be a good
idea or even possible on this list ?

I'm sure my problem has been gone over many times. But this
is the place to ask, for sure. I can not for the life of me get parnet
to work between my A500 and A4000/040. I made my own cable and saw it
work between an A2000 and A3000 but at home it does not work. That was
well over a year ago. So last month having lost my cable I had a need
to parnet again. I went to my local dealer and spent $20 on a cable.
Yep, still did not work. Here are the details of my effort(s).
I plug the parnet cable to both machines parallel ports, turn on
both machines. Try starting one as the host the other as the client,
The A500 locks up, no guru just can't do anything (no mouse, no keyboard).
Warm boot both, then switch host/client machines. Same problem, A500
locks up.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so what to do,... WHAT to DO?
I gave last year, gave up again. Floppies work but parnet would be more
convient. Looking forward to some help/comments.

It could be called pip.device! :-)
slip.device is really too slow.
How nice it would be to get Envoy with the speed of ParNET.

Yes it exists and is called plip387.lha and can be found on most
aminet ftp sites. I use it with amitcp v2.2 but it is fully sana
compatible and should also work with envoy (I think).
It uses a differnet cable than parnet but there exists also a
spar.device which uses the parnet cable to make tcpip parallel
connections but i was unable to get that one to work.

Hi,
I just joined this group a few days ago. I'm new to all this as well
as the internet. Anyway, I have been using an Amiga for almost a year now.
I have an A3000 and a CDTV networket via ParNet. I am using ParBench31F.
Since using ParNet, I have not been able to use the icons on the Amiga
CDROMS (Aminet and FishMarket). Here's what happens:
From the A3000, I click on the network icon using the mouse. The icons for
df0 and RAM are then displayed but no cd0 icon.
I would like to be able to use the .info files on the CDROM while using
ParNet. Can this be done? If so, how?
Looking forward to the postings concerning ParNet.

uncomment the line that says CD NET:CD0, so:

From: Jan Harkes <jaharkes@jol07.cs.vu.nl>
OK here it is,
I am running AmiTCP for a while now, not because I want to be UN*X compatible,
but to be able to use the better network configuration possibilities. I used
to run ParNET, now I am running a cslip connection. When I found a certain
'spar.device' I was very glad to know that I would get my old speed back.
BUT the device is so terrible bug ridden. (I have fixed a lot of the bugs like
the device used 6 byte addressing and tells the network software it uses only 4.)
Now I am stuck on a weird bug, and it only happens when I try to push a lot
through the device. <GURU> The funny thing is that sometimes parnet.device guru's
while at other times spar.device has a problem. It could have something with
buffers or relative priorities (parnet.device has pri 0, spar.device pri 5)
Does anybody know if there is a WORKING version of spar.device. Otherwise I
am wasting my time tracing the program for bugs. I don't know if I ever will
get it to work. (thinking about rewriting the whole thing) But if I do I will
tell ya all.
PS. Don't tell me I should try plip.device... I DID! After resoldering my cables
(And noticing I needed an extra line), my poor little A500 got completely
overpowered by my brothers A3000. I got so many interrupts that my 500 got to a
grinding halt. (There wasn't even enough CPU power left to ACK the packets)

Ok, I'll break the silence (not that it wasn't nice 8^). I
have an A2000, an A500, and a CDTV. I have the parnet
distribution but I haven't yet obtained the required
cable. I no longer have an external floppy drive (it
finally died 8^( ).
My questions are:
1) Do I need an external floppy drive to parnet the A2000
and the CDTV together? How else would I install NET: et.
al. on the CDTV? The cdtv document file seems to allude to
loading from CD, but I'm still a little foggy on the
process.
2) Are there any FAQ files associated with this list, or
anywhere else aside from those in the distribution? And,
if so, where is it?
Thanks from one who need it spelled out!

I can't seem to get Parnet to work.
The two Amigas:
1. Stock A4000 040 with 14M ram
2. A500 with GVP series one hard drive card and AdSpeed.
I fire up the host script on the A4000 , then on the A500 the
client script. The both get to the point of
waiting for network connection. But then the A4000 locks up when
the A500 gets to the waiting for network connection point.
I am using parbench 3.1 I have tried various combinations of
things. Such as disabling the Adspeed, turning off the caches on
the A4000, different parnet.device files (may be the problem),
ect.
If you have a similar setup or can offer advice I'd be glad to
hear your comments.
I've about given up, I'm now struggling more with trying to get
AmiTCP to work.

Well I can't help you with your problem because we don't have
problems with parnet between an a500 an an a4000. We have no troubles
connecting any amiga to another amiga via parnet and we do that
regularly.
We had an a4000 connected to an a500 yesterday an it worked
perfectly. We use also parbench 3.1 the only thing I can think of is
that the host/client scripts are broken and both machines are in the
same mode then you get this lookup.
We also use amitcp (now v3.0 beta) and that works without problems on
our slip, plip and ethernet network that we create on our computer
meetings. They only problem is with netfs, when you mount a disk of
another computer that has the exact physical and logical name. eg.
dh1: and Workbench then some programs get confused (dopus 4.12) and
the mix the file actions on both machines. But there is a new version
and that we haven't tested that one.
If you have any questions...just ask maybe we still can help in some
way...

(with parnet ofcourse). I tried out the parnet.device version 2.1, which
is supposed to be an optimized version, without debug information. (parnet
always dumps a lot of garbage to some port, used for debugging) BUT alas
it manages to crash my a500, (my brother's a3000 seemed to work fine, but
suffered occasional crashes). I reverted back to dillons good ol' version.
Secondly, I went experimenting with amitcp. Then came spar V37.1, what a load
of bugs, (like allocating not enough memory for the transmit and receive
buffers, assuming the msgport is the same when reopening parnet.device.....
AND MORE!) I patched it completely. Lost the authors address. Then came V37.2
it was really rewritten, but some of the old bugs were still hanging around.
(along with a couple of new ones) At the moment, my (new) patch of spar 37.2
seems to be pretty stable, except for the fact that, when the device isn't
used for some time, AMITCP CRASHES! ???? (maybe a wrong pointer somewhere)
Strangely enough it HASN'T crashed yet, now that I use the 3.0 beta version
of AmiTCP.
As you can see, I have had a lot of fun the past weeks (months?). I am
thinking about putting the parnet.device code directly into spar.device and
tweaking it a bit, possibly making it parnet-incompatible, to gain some speed.
BTW. my xfer rates are around 28KB/s, that is bytes, that is!

Well, the rumour goes, that when you pop the latest CD of Billy Idol into
a CD-ROM drive you get a load of satanic phrases, a couple of viruses (virii)
and a completely installed version of parnet.
Ehhhr, NOPE, you really need some kind of bootable floppy to start parnet.
(You could borrow it once and never ever shut down your CDTV, and hope that
nothing will crash)

There are so many frequently asked questions about parnet, they probably
know the answers in the alt.folklore.computers newsgroup. But noone has
had the courage to compile them into a file. :) Just ask and some parnet-
wizard on this list, might grant you a reply.

OK, here's an even more rudimentary question(s):
Are CD-ROM's such as Fred Fish's bootable? Can I just pop
one in my CDTV and boot AmigaDOS?
and if so...
Could I boot my CDTV with, say, a Fred Fish CD-ROM and
install the parnet stuff on that side that way?
and if so...
Could I do the above and access my hard drive on my A2000?
(This last thing's not so important to me; just curious.)
Note also that I do not have a keyboard for my CDTV.
What other AmigaDOS bootable CD-ROM's are there?
If the above is feasible, particularly the first two, all I
need is a Fred Fish disk (which is mainly what I want
anyway) and the parnet cable and I'm in business. If not,
I may need to buy an external drive, which I'd rather not
do.
Well, Doc, what do you think?

Current Fred Fish disks are bootable. Future disks produced by Fred himself
will not be. It will say on the label in the jewel case.
:Could I boot my CDTV with, say, a Fred Fish CD-ROM and

Yes. But if you remove the CD, the machine resets, so you can only do this
for bootable disks.
:Could I do the above and access my hard drive on my A2000?

If you are already running ParNET, yes, if you've got a keyboard to set up the
mounts and enter the commands.
:Note also that I do not have a keyboard for my CDTV.
That's more of a challenge.
:What other AmigaDOS bootable CD-ROM's are there?
Games, but they don't drop you in AmigaDOS; they go on to load the game.

The ParNET, bootable Fish CD-ROMs are designed to be shoved into the
CD-TV and have the CD-TV act as a CD-ROM server for the main Amiga. If you
don't have a keyboard on the CD-TV, you won't be able to create Mountlists
in RAM: and mount A2000 volumes on the CD-TV. Alternately, if you *do* get
a floppy, you can create a DNET boot disk that has the netkeys handler and
set up this way...

Sitting at the A2000, while running DNET and the netkeys handler, if you just
move the mouse off the screen to the right, it appears on the CD-TV's monitor.
You can then open windows, type and activate icons to your heart's content. I
did this the night I got my CD-TV and it worked great. I had no mouse or
keyboard on the CD-TV (just the IR controller) and I was able to explore the
CD-TV welcome disk. The CD-TV boots DF0: before CD0:, BTW.
Check the docs, I don't know if the netkeys handler works with ParNET.
My advice is to bite the bullet and buy a used Amiga external floppy. They
go for ~$50, these days.

Subject: Parnet trouble
I purchased a Parnet breakout-box (they did the work in the breakout box
required) and a parallel to parallel cable from my computer store. They
gave me the Parbench software. When I hook up the cable and the box between
the two computers (A1200 and A500) and install/run the software, the host
computer locks up for about 5 minutes when I run the boot.host script.
(Windows/gadgets work, but Workbench and all other programs that I have
running lock up.)
The client computer also locks up when I try to use a dos command on the
NET device. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? If I can be more
descriptive in my problem, just let me know...

Would this setup work?
A500 with HD and extra memory, HP550C on serial port.
linked via Parnet to:
A1000 with 512k
Feedback appreciated. Would you be able to kickstart the A1000, boot
the workbench with parnet utilities, and then access the hard drive and
printer on the Amiga 500?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, I suppose that's good advice (although, hey, $50.00
could buy another Meg of RAM or go toward that
accelerator). I do have an A500 whose external drive died,
so I will be able to put it to use there as well. And
thanks especially for the very detailed response (candidate
FAQ material(?)), I have a much clearer view of the
situtation.
Thanks also to Jan Harkes and Richard Dyson for your help.
P.S. (non-relevant to parnet)
Ya know, I'm still trying to justify the purchase of that
CDTV. I wanted a CD-ROM+. My kids were hyped up for the
game-systems-to-end-all-game-systems (wrong!!) and I'm not
sure what my wife thought we were getting, but alas, to
date, all we really use it for is that encyclopedia (oh,
and for music CD's, of course ;^).

Yes, I have more information about it.
Oh, did you want the information, too? OK, John and I have worked
up a new version of parnet that fixes a few bugs and is much more
convenient to install and configure. We'll probably put that version
out in the not-too-distant future.
We also have started dusting off the next version of NET:, which has
had a long and convoluted legal history but is now back in our hands.
The 3.0 version of NET: supports access via multiple hardware
connections, fully asynchronous access, and more. We'd need to write
a SANA driver for it before it would be really useful - right now the
only hardware driver it has is for Commodore's INET software. We may
or may not end up doing anything with this, since ENVOY is now
available.

Well. I finally got to use parnet, PARBENCH actually. It was a breeze to
install and after fiddling with the icons a bit, it worked great.
Far better than I''d expected. And FAST.
(Link was betw A2000+Zeus & A3000, with a prebuilt cable from HT Electronics)
I have a lab at Costano School in East Palo Alto with 3 A500's with HDs,
9 A1000's, and a CDTV. This thang will be very useful.
Also, PLEASE let me know when the new multiple hw version is ready.
The lab above is obviously begging for such a setup.
Can you print over the parnet?
